East Java



East Java is a province in the eastern part of Java Island, Indonesia. Its capital is Surabaya. Its area is 47,922 km ², and its population 37,070,731 people (2005). East Java has the largest territory among the 6 provinces in Java, and has the second largest population in Indonesia after West Java, before being unpacked in Banten Province. East Java is bordered by Java Sea to the north, the Strait of Bali in the east, the Indian Ocean in the south, and Central Java province in the west. East Java region also includes the island of Madura, the island of Bawean, Kangean Island and numerous small islands in the Java Sea and Indian Ocean (Island Sempu and Nusa Barung).

East Java is known as a center of eastern Indonesia, and has a fairly high economic significance, which contributes 14.85% of the national Gross Domestic Product.

East Java province bordering the Java Sea in the north, east Bali, the Indian Ocean in the south, and Central Java province in the west. Long east-west stretch of about 400 km. Wide expanse of north-south in the west about 200 km, but in the eastern part is narrower by about 60 km. Is the largest island of Madura in East Java, separated by a mainland Java by Madura Strait. Bawean island located about 150 km north of Java. To the east of Madura are clusters of islands, the most eastern is Kangean Islands and the northernmost is Masalembu Islands. In the southern part there are two small islands namely Pulau Nusa Barung and Sempu.
